Denise at Paws Inc. matches families with rescue dogs. If you’re interested in adopting a dog, we’ll be happy to assist.

If you’d like to find out more about dog adoption, we can definitely help with practical guidance and support.

THE ADOPTION PROCESS

All of our rescue dogs are assessed by foster carers in their homes. This process provides us insight into the dogs personality, strengths and challenges.

How the process works:

Prior to adoption, home visits are conducted to ensure a safe environment, to meet family members and other animals in the home.
Once the home check is complete you are welcome to visit the dog in his foster home.
The dog will go on a two week trial with your family. We are always happy to extend the trial period if necessary.
If for any reason at any time the adoption fails please contact us immediately, we will always take our dogs back into care.

MATCHING DOGS TO PEOPLE

Dog adoption is based on matching the right dogs with the right people and the right environments. If you’re interested in adopting a dog, email and tell us all about your family, other pets, lifestyle, accommodation and anything else relevant to your enquiry,

Elijah’s foster carer has this to say about him.
“Elijah loves to be outside and can most often be found sunning himself in the garden. He gets along well with the other dogs in his foster home, a collection of small golden oldies. On leash Elijah or Eli as he’s affectionately known can be a bit reactive to new dogs but is progressing well with his training.

Being 10 years old, Eli is a bit set in his ways, he knows what he likes and what he doesn’t, he is learning through gentle leadership how to be a well behaved gentleman but he can sometimes be a little bit of a grump so is best in an adult only home.”

Elijah does have some arthritis but after a course of anti-inflammatory injections is feeling much better, his new family would need to be aware of when he might be feeling a little sore and get him a vet check-up. He might benefit from some daily help with something like Rosehip Vital.

Elijah needs access inside when his family are home and has a long coat that requires regular brushing to avoid matting. We know that the perfect retirement home is out there for Eli.

Nikita is an 11 year old Pom Mix - gorgeously sassy and quite the personality when you get to know her!

She loves hanging out with you on the couch and having belly rubs but also likes to chase a ball and play with her squeaky toys- the goal being to remove the squeak!!She loves running on the sand and chasing seagulls too.

She is very loving and protective and likes to bark at the neighbourhood dogs barking as if to say “I’m Queen of this Hood”- from the safety of the balcony of course! She likes short walks too -, especially in the sun.

Adoption Criteria:
-Nikita is best suited as the only dog in the home, she likes humans all to herself!
-A family home more often than not, we know currently everyone is spending more time at home but we’d like to find Nikita a fam that is around a lot when the world gets back to normal.
-Despite being a mature lady, Nikita still enjoys a daily stroll.
-A family committed to the veterinary requirements of a senior pet. Despite being in pretty good shape, Nikita will most likely need yearly dental, etc.
-No small children, a mature home is best for this mature lady.
-Location: Nikita is being fostered in Sydney, ideally she will find a family in Sydney but the ACT will also be considered.

Buddy and Loki are two lovable Beagle mix brothers from different crossbreed litters, they are sweet as sugar and too cute to boot.

Now fully grown (both over 25kgs) they are well past the naughty stage and love to lounge around the house together, playing, having a wrestle, and keeping each other company. Both boys are toilet trained, use a doggy door, and are home during the day alone a few days a week.

Access inside as they please, this is what the boys are accustom to and like this arrangement. Ideally, their new fam will have a decent sized yard for them to also explore. Daily walks and exercise are an absolute must, they enjoy walks and going to the dog park, have loads of energy to burn but are happy to just chill for the remainder of the day.

They have toddlers in the home that they tolerate well, but being hounds, their noses rule their lives and are always looking out for a dropped "snack" or to "share" their food. Older children or teenagers would be more suitable.

These boys are delightfully sweet but are larger dogs (between 25-33kgs) and will require a family that can handle their size, experience with larger dogs is preferred but not essential.

Scamp and Tinker came into our care after their beloved dad passed away, they have only known love and you can tell because these two have such sweet, kind natures and the sheer site of their low riding bodies makes you melt.

What type of home are these ladies looking for, keep reading :

Scamp and Tinker are after a retirement home, somewhere they can potter around and be doted upon.

Short strolls and a good diet are needed to get rid of some of those extra kilos... currently Scamp (black and tan) is the heavier of the two and requires some extra motivation to get that body moving.

Pandy is another small dog who was discovered living in a situation that was not conducive to her health and wellbeing. Fortunately, Pandy along with other dogs on the premises were surrendered, we took 6 of those dogs, 3 have been adopted by their foster carers.

Pandy is a very sweet, playful girl who she does take a little while to settle due to her background, once she is happy in her new situation, she becomes very cuddly and playful. Pandy is currently living with two other dogs; one is a similar age to her which is nice for Pandy as she now the freedom to play zoomies and to wrestle with her foster brother dog. Another dog in her new home is very important for Pandy so that she gains confidence knowing that her doggie family member is there for her.

Pandy is wary of children, again this stems from her previous life so ideally a calmer home where she has a doggie friend and humans who will work with her nervousness. She is a great eater and not fussy at all about what is served for breakfast and dinner. She is used to being left alone (with her dog friends) while her carers go to work but of course Pandy would love to live with a family who don’t go out to work five days a week and can spend time with their doggies while working from home etc.

Pandy has not yet learnt the art of toilet training completely, she uses a doggie door but may still have accidents, continued gentle training in this area is needed. We know that Pandy was never taken on walks so further on lead training will be required.

Pandy has a coat that will require regular brushing and a tidy up.

Introducing Pari our sweet little Maltese x Shih Tzu who was rescued by DAP from a disgusting back yard breeder in Sydney over a year ago. When Pari came to us she was in a sad and sorry state with 3 tiny puppies in tow, those puppies like Mum Pari were underweight, filthy and very frightened! We fattened everyone up, did all their vet work, gave them lots of love and attention and have since rehomed all Pari's puppies to great homes.

The following months allowed Pari to have her own time, no more puppies, a full tummy and always cuddles galore. Late last year Pari had surgery to correct her luxating patella's, she has now fully recovered from that surgery and is ready for adoption. Short walks for Pari will be best.

Pari does have a little anxiety due to the cruelty inflicted on her by the back yard breeder, she can become nervous if people approach her to pick her up. She is not a fan of being picked and will never be a lap dog, instead preferring to sit on her bed and watch the going's on in and around the house. Pari loves other dogs particularly younger ones, she takes them under her wing and plays rough and tumble, with them.

Pari is a great guard dog and very alert, we think she will suit a home with no children older children or a retired couple. Pari will be a great addition to a family who will allow her space and let her be, she would love another small friendly dog in her new home, and parents who won't leave her every day for hours on end.

Introducing Maggie (brown) 5 and Arthur (black) 2. These Foxie x’s were rescued from a bad situation out west of Sydney and are in foster care in Canberra. We believe they are probably mother and son.

Maggie is a quiet little girl who is happy to potter around the garden with you, Arthur is more adventurous and enjoys going on a couple of walks each day. At night they love to sleep snuggled up together, and during the day they do like to know where each other is.

When Maggie and Arthur are rehomed, we know that they will regress for a short period of time, but they will settle, both dogs were anxious little bundles when they came in to care but are now happy and comfortable in their foster home with Jennie. Arthur is quite outgoing and enjoys getting out and about, he also enjoys some puppyish behaviour such as chewing things so he will need lots of toys to distract him.

They’ve had very little training before coming into foster care, but they’re smart little dogs and will both learn quickly. They get very excited at mealtimes and Arthur might give you a little nip if you don’t hurry up and serve their food.

Ideally, we would like to keep Maggie and Arthur together, but if that is not possible, we will separate them. Both dogs are house dogs and use a doggie door to come inside and out, they must sleep inside. They have typical Foxie coats that are low maintenance but do shed as is typical with the breed.

Marshal is a sweet, sweet old gentleman who loves the company of his humans, is great on a lead and is mostly toilet trained. Pretty amazing for an elderly gent who was found wandering the street with his partner! Sadly, she was run over by a truck, and he was left wondering what happened to her! Marshal would love a home with a family or single who is home a lot of the time as he does like to follow you around all over the place and sleep in the bed with you, he also enjoys home cooking.

He has a coat that will require regular grooming and is a house dog requiring access via a doggie door or similar.

Odin is a long-haired Chihuahua weighing just 3.4kgs, he is being fostered in Sydney and is 8 years old. He came into care with DAP originally in Dec 2021, via the RSPCA from an unscrupulous dog breeding establishment.

Odin arrived with zero trust in people but quickly made friends with his K9 companions in his foster home and slowly learnt to trust most people. Odin loves visiting with his female people friends, exploring their garden, and having cuddles, his special delight is visiting with the lady at the local markets who sells home-made dog treats. YUM!

Odin has had surgery on his grade 4 luxating patella’s, the surgery was not hugely successful, but he is happy to do easy walks, (Odin is very well behaved on the lead) and loves to scamper with his doggy mates and being chauffeur driven in his very own chariot. (doggie pram) he goes to the local dog park and makes friends with good dogs quickly and easily.

In Aug 2022 Odin was adopted by a loving couple. They have cared for him extremely well and Odin adores his adoption Mum and his K9 brother, a medium Cavoodle. Unfortunately, Odin has not been able to overcome his fear of men and children, (children tend to be unpredictable and fast moving, something his history and his knees mean he can’t cope with). So, with heavy hearts they have asked DAP to find Odin a new home.

Odin needs a new family in a quiet household with a gentle Mum or two and someone home most of the time, he would also love a doggy friend. Odin’s new family will need to be patient and gentle to gain his trust, he will need a safe haven in the home and not be expected to socialise with visitors unless he chooses to. Sounds daunting but once Odin trusts he will be a happy playful companion and fabulous snuggle bug to his Mum and doggy family.

Odin must always have access to his castle via a doggie door or open door, a home without children or men, we know that the men in our families are trustworthy but unfortunately Odin doesn’t. A nice Mum or two will suit him perfectly. His coat will require regular grooming.

Celine was rescued from Campbeltown Pound in Sydney some time ago. She came into the pound with her daughter Gracie – both dogs were in horrific condition, and it was obvious to anyone that they had been used for breeding and looked to have had many, many litters! Both Gracie and Celine have required various surgeries and medication to bring them back to good health and are now enjoying a good life with their foster carers.

Celine is a very sweet dog, she has a beautiful personality with her humans, is very obedient and loves the dog she is living with. She goes out on walks around the neighbourhood and has been to the beach a few times and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. We believe that the best home for Celine will be as an only dog, she is a bit of a couch potato these days and does enjoy laying in her bed in the company of her human or toddling around the garden enjoying the cool breeze blowing in her face.

Celine is very much a house dog and must always have access inside, she does love children so a home with kids would also be nice for her. She is on the quieter side so a home with a retired couple would also be a nice option for her.

READ ROUGHY'S STORY AS TOLD BY HIS FOSTER CARER:

When I picked Roughy up from Campbelltown Pound he was a mess. Filthy dirty, with fly-bitten ears that were crusty and black at the top. Roughy has not been treated very kindly in the past.

After a couple of weeks with us though, Roughy has proven to be a definite lap lover, he craves affection and is blooming with it! He likes to approach you himself rather than you are approaching him, we expect this will improve with lots of confidence building, love, and attention, by his foster carer and new pawrents when he is adopted. Roughy is a hungry boy, always, he was very skinny and has learned that the kitchen is where all sorts of goodies are! he has eaten everything offered although is not a huge fan of fruit and vegetables.

Roughy enjoys chasing a ball and will bark to remind you that he has dropped it at your feet. He would love to sleep with his ball and never let it out of his sight if given the chance. We are limiting the amount of time he is given the ball as he can become a little obsessed with it. Roughy is keen and smart, exploring the whole off-leash park, but returning to a whistle or his name, he is still not entirely confident that he isn't in trouble when he returns to you which is a little sad. He is enjoying walks on lead and is also learning how to get his harness on quickly, sitting beautifully for me to put his legs in already, he is also walking very well on the lead without pulling.

He loves to show off his perfect sit, for treats, pats, and attention he is always very eager to please. Roughy accepts all the other dogs he meets when out on a walk or at the dog park. He did come into the pound with a little Staffy so will be fine with another dog in his new family. Roughy will be fine as an only dog or with another dog for company providing, he is not left outside on his own for hours on end.

Roughy would love a new home where he gets to sit beside you on the couch, he relaxes and enjoys pats and cuddles while laying with you. His confidence is growing daily; however, he does like a bit of reassurance that if there is a thunderstorm around, he will play in the yard on his own chasing lizards and scaring off any pesky birds who come into his territory. Roughy’s tail has been docked, this practice was banned in NSW in June 2004, and as Roughy is only young his tail would have been docked illegally. Poor little fellow.

What an adorable little munchkin Gracie is! With her squishy face and one ear, her little smile is very endearing. Everybody she meets falls in love immediately.

Gracie came into care from the pound and lucky she did! She had been missing out on the TLC she deserved! She was stinky, and incredibly dirty with ear and tail pocket infections, together with being a little underweight and on heat. This girl needed a spa session!! She behaves so well for baths and didn’t even mind her poochie pedicure!

With a bit of TLC and regular baths, she has brushed up nicely. All her infections are gone, and her coat is looking good now. Gracie just needs regular maintenance (ear, skin folds, tail pocket cleaning, nails, and regular baths) like all French Bulldogs do, along with medication for her allergies. She has been easy care really and just fitted into her foster home like she belongs.

Gracie enjoys being with her people most in the world! She is loyalty personified! She must have a lap to snuggle up on, even a mat next to the throne – because she will follow you everywhere you go - and in her opinion, she would be happy for you to just attach her to your side In all seriousness, she is your poochie best friend. She gets on well with our other dogs and would prefer to be homed with other dogs as she gets a little anxious if left on her own. She has been fine to be left with our dogs for the day.

Of course, Gracie also likes to go with you. She is good in the car and easy to walk on lead. She has enjoyed the ‘café set’ sitting quietly and watching the world go by, going into the aged care home to see family, and watching her foster brother doing hydrotherapy (amongst a group of other dogs).

Gracie would be best homed with a submissive or easy-going canine friend as if challenged by another dog, she will respond. We have only seen this a couple of times in the past 3 months with our reactive, resource-guarding boy. Otherwise, she has been a dream when taken out and has coped with our 11-month-old staffy X pup’s boofy playful advances and even joins in the games and shares bones and beds with him.

Gracie is crate trained, her toilet training is much more reliable, and her gentle snoring will provide white noise as she sleeps next to you on the bed at night.

We cannot fault this girl! If the timing was different, she would be staying. Gracie has had surgery to widen her nasal passages.

Gracie is a house dog who always requires access to the home, being a Frenchie, she needs regular baths and attention paid to her skin folds.

Biggie who was Pumba is a super sweet 10-year-old Pug. He loves being in your company and is so chill! He has a cute and funny little personality, which comes out more as he gets to know you. After he eats, he celebrates with his stuffed toys and plays with them, chomping them and then throwing them up in the air and chasing them.

He is food-obsessed and loves watching you eat! He moves in slow motion, so patience is needed when on walks. He is not a constant barker, but he does bark when someone is at the door or when he is in the backyard and can hear commotion like lawnmowers or other dogs barking.

He would do well with a yard that doesn’t adjoin many other properties. He has a few bald patches from wearing a harness 24/7 so he will be better off going nakie where possible. Mostly it is important for him to go where his owner will be at home often. With a healthy diet and regular strolls, he will do well wherever he goes and he will make someone a wonderful companion!

House trained! And will guard you when you’re in the bathroom! Still learning manners like sitting for treats, shake, take nice (he’s a bit chompy!) Still learning how to use the doggy door.Loves small stuffed toys and is an expert fluff extractor.

He will have a go at humping any smaller dogs which often lands him in trouble. He doesn’t have much socialisation from being alone for so many years, so would be better suited as an only dog.

Favourite hooman foods: ANY, (he’s a true foodie) but especially croissants! Human food should be limited though as he needs to lose a few!

Blessings and Tata are 12 years young and have always lived together. They rely on each other however Tata (the tiny one) likes to rule the roost. She will let you know if you need to do something more to please her. She likes to get the lion's share of the attention too. Blessings loves cuddles and sitting on a lap in a sunny spot, he gets very excited when the lead comes out and starts dancing in circles.

They have been a great part of the rescue squad on bush and beach walks with their devoted foster carer. Their coats are getting better, and their nutrition has improved. Tata likes a bit of hand feeding from time to time to help maintain her weight. They both need regular brushing and benefit from dog groomer visits.

If you are ready to be bossed around by little dogs that demand your devotion, then these may be the perfect pair for you.

Blessings and Tata's foster carer is going to cry buckets of tears when he has to say goodbye, but he recognises that they do need their own people.

Famous is a confident, fun loving party girl who just so happens to be almost completely blind. Famous is looking for an experienced owner ideally with arctic breed experience to help continue to guide her in the right direction.

Like most huskies, Famous has energy to burn and likes a good daily run, she loves to go on hikes and meet new friends but can be a little over the top at times. Famous is a resource guarder, this means that she protects things she perceives as her own, she needs to be fed in a quiet space away from other animals and humans.

Famous needs a house with minimal stairs and a decent sized yard, she is used to have full access inside always. She is not suitable to apartment living or a home with children under 13. Her signature husky talk is a plenty and you might find yourself speaking the same language after spending enough time with her. She’s loud and proud!

Famous weighs around 25kgs, is quite heavy set and her hair will be having you living in winter wonderland, all year round. She requires brushing multiple times per week (something that requires some negotiation) and requires a whole life of LOVE.

Health: Famous has congenital cataracts, she was born with vision impairment which will likely become worse as ages. She will require 6-12 monthly checkups with an ophthalmologist to ensure her eyes are not developing glaucoma or other associated diseases.

Famous is not for the faint at heart but she has captured the heart of those that get to spend time with her. She is a house dog; house trained and must always have access to inside her home.

Our puppies will have 3 vaccinations, all worming, microchip and desex. They will go with a desexing contract and need to be taken to the vet of our choice for their desexing at 6 months of age (have been booked in 3rd week of June).

The type of home we would like for will include another small, happy, playful, desexed, young dog already living with the family, there will be no exceptions.

A family with gentle, kind kids over the age of eight years, or a couple/single without kids. Remember puppies need lots of sleep when they are little so rest away from kids is important.

A home where both parents do not go out to work each day leaving their doggie family home alone for hours on end.

A doggie door or open door for the dogs to go inside and out 24/7. Puppies must be house dogs, not left outside for any reason.

A family who will take their puppy-to-puppy school and do further training once the puppy is old enough.

A safe garden or park close by to run and play, and daily walks when the puppy is old enough.

Grandparents with small visiting grandbabies are not ideal as little fingers can get bitten and no one is happy. Puppies have very sharp teeth.
